Gardening Terms To Know

COMPOST

FREE Organic Matter - The best fertilizer you can give your plants come directly from your kitchen scraps and paper waste like toilet paper and paper towel tubes and brown paper bags.  Microbes and organisms break down the organic matter and make the nutrients available to your plants.  It's a wonderful relationship.

COVER CROPS

Plants that remain in the soil over the Winter months to prevent erosion and add organic matter for the upcoming growing season.  Winter rye, Oilseed Radish, Clover and Alfalfa are just a few possibilities.  These plants can also have alternate uses for livestock.

FERTILIZER

Organic or synthetic nutrients that are added to plant soil for their use in the growing stage.  Compost is the best fertilizer (as listed above)  but there are many products on the market to provide assorted amounts of nutrients to your plants.  Most list NPK levels while plants need more than just Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.  There are 17 essential nutrients for plant growth.

GERMINATION

When a seed breaks its shell and the life development begins.  Some seeds will germinate and show life within 2 days while others may require 3 weeks and still others lie dormant for months waiting for the proper temperature, moisture and/or light source to begin the life cycle.

HEAVY FEEDER

This term refers to plants that require a lot of organic matter (and/or other fertilizers) to thrive.  Most plants that are grown for the fruit and not (only) the leaves will require ample amounts of nutrients to produce healthy, nutrient-dense fruits.  Usually heavy feeders will leave your soil depleted and you will need to amend it at the end of the season.  You can add organic matter or you can plant Cover Crops to keep your soil alive and thriving over winter months.

POLLINATION

The process of transferring pollen from the male part of a flower (the anther) to the female part (the stigma), which is required for the reproduction of the plant and the production of seeds and fruit.  Corn is an example of a plant that is pollinated by the wind.  Birds, bees and other bugs do most of this very important work so it's important to not poison them with pesticides and toxic chemicals.

Plant Life Cycles -

ANNUAL

Process completes in one season or year.

BIENNIAL

Process completes in two seasons or years

PERENNIAL

Plants live for longer than 2 years.
