PLANT DESCRIPTIONS FOR APRIL 18TH

AMARANTH

Annual

Versatile and beautiful.  Edible leaves and seeds. Does best with full sun. Drought tolerant.  Produces abundant seeds.  Will likely self seed for next season.  

BASIL

Annual

Excellent companion plant

CHERVIL

Annual

Dainty but still hardy. Partial Shade preferred.  Will flower in heat of Summer and drop seeds.  Delicious light licorice flavored greens.  

CHICORY

Perennial

Woody herb.  Leaves and buds are edible. Best known for roots that are baked and ground as coffee substitute.  May benefit gut health and blood sugar control.  Flowers can be blue, pink or white.

GROUND CHERRY

Annual

Not well known but worth growing.  Taste like a mix between tomato and pineapple.  Small sweet fruits grow inside a papery husk.  Nightshade (like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant).  Grows like a shrub.

JADE

Perennial

Full sun.  Minimal watering.  Prefers dry soil since they hold moisture in the leaves.  Not much health benefits but a beautiful plant to add to your landscape.  Diversity is always helpful in a garden.

LAMB'S EAR

Perennial

Soft fuzzy leaves with small purple flowers when in bloom.  Ground cover (bare soil is not good).  Drought tolerant.  Attracts pollinators to your garden.

LEMON BALM

Perennial

Bushy citrus flavored plant in the MINT family.  Be sure to contain her in a pot.  Harvest regularly.  Smells and tastes delightful.  Add young leaves to your salad.  Older leaves can be used for tea.  

LEMONGRASS

Annual

Tropical plant.  Prefers full sun.  Keep moist without waterlogging.  Grows in clumps.  Can be used in teas and soups.  Aromatic herb.  Does not tolerate frost.  

LETTUCE - MERLOT

Annual

Beautiful leaf lettuce that can take heat up to 80F or higher without bolting.  Great for planting late Summer for Fall harvest.  Partial shade.  

LUPINE

Annual

Prefers full sun.  Not drought tolerant.  Consistent watering.  Deadhead flowers when they die to encourage more blooms.  Part of the legume (bean) family so they fix nitrogen.  Great companion plant for veggies.

MARIGOLD

Annual

Excellent companion plant for vegetable garden.  Seeds in each bloom.  Pest repellent qualities.  


MULLEIN

Biennial

Drought tolerant. Soft velvety leaves. Will flower and provide seeds in Year 2.  Tall flower spikes. Full Sun.  Drought tolerant.   


OREGANO

Perennial

Very hardy perennial.  Full Sun.  Aromatic herb great for cooking.  Can be dried and stored for long periods.  

PARSLEY

Biennial

Full Sun. Harvest regularly. More than just a garnish.  Very tasty in salads.

PEPPERS - THREE HOT VARIETIES

PEPPERS - HOT WAX

Annual

HOT Peppers grow best in hot weather.  May need some protection from sun.  They grow slowly and change color  when mature.

PEPPERS - RED HOT

Annual

HOT Peppers grow best in hot weather.  May need some protection from sun.  They grow slowly and change color  when mature.

PEPPERS - SERRANO

Annual

HOT Chili Peppers grow best in hot weather.  May need some protection from sun.  They grow slowly and change color  when mature.

PURPLE SWEET POTATOES

Annual

Plant slips in warm sandy soil.  Maintain consistent moisture.  Long season - about 120 days.  Expect to harvest in Fall.    

ROSEMARY

Perennial

Very hardy aromatic herb for cooking, teas, potpourri and more.  

SAGE - CLARY

Perennial

Requires full sun.  Once established, very drought tolerant.  Cut back faded flowers to encourage more blooms.  

SAGE - WHITE

Tender Perennial

Tropical.  Requires full sun.  Prefers dry soil Extremely drought tolerant.  Best grown in pots - avoid frost.  

SORREL - GREEN

Perennial

Cut and Come Again Greens with mild citrus flavor.  High in fiber, magnesium and Vitamins C and A.  Thrives in full sun or partial shade.  Harvest regularly.

Perennial

A beautiful version of the Sorrel plant.  Cut and Come Again Greens with mild citrus flavor.  High in fiber, magnesium and Vitamins C and A.  Thrives in full sun or partial shade.  Harvest regularly.  

SWISS CHARD

Biennial

Leafy greens from the Beet family.  Comes in a variety of colors.  Prefers full sun and consistent moisture.  Cut and Come Again.  

TOMATO - CHERRY

Annual

Full Sun. Heavy feeder. Well draining soil.  Consistent moisture.  Will fruit all season.

YARROW

Perennial

Easy to grow.  Comes in a variety of colors.   Great for pollinators.  Can spread - often used along borders.  Toxic to horses, dogs and cats.
